What Are Mp3 files?
Mp3 files are a new and easy way of distributing music over the web. Usually when you take a song of a cd and turn it into a music file, it is about 45 megabytes in size or so. That is because it is a .wav file. Using Mp3 compression (MPEG Layer 3) however, A song that is about 4 minutes long for example can be saved as 4 megabytes and is still playable. The sound degradation is so small that you can hardly tell the difference in quality.
What Are Their Other Benefits?
Because they are so small in size, you can store about 150 of them on a single cd if you have a cd writer. But they can only be played using an Mp3 Player! So don't try to play the cd in your stereo. If you want to put them on cd to play on your stereo you will need a Mp3 decoder. A program that converts them back into .wav format. And you will also need special software for your cd writer. Another way to play them on your stereo is by buying a Y adapter cable (about $7.00 Canadian) that can connect your soundcard to your stereo. This is the best way to do it! The sound is great, plus you can record your Mp3s to tape very easily.
Are They Illegal?
They are only illegal if the music is copyrighted and you don't own a cd that the music is from. An organization called the RIAA (Recording Industy Of American Artists or something like that) is very concerned about this because too many people are downloading music they don't own.
